The initial consultation is my chance to meet you in person and learn about your personal tastes and requirements for the garden. I always view the site in person to explore how the garden could be transformed in a way that coheres with your indoor space. On the basis of this visit, I will send you a brief and my fee proposal.
The topographical survey records all levels and contours and takes note of existing features and any trees and buildings to be retained. It will also form the basis of the 3D CAD (computer-aided design) model I will build. For smaller and simpler sites, my team performs the survey ourselves. If the site is larger or more complicated, I will arrange a professional topographical survey.
After discussing my initial ideas for the garden with you, I will create the Presentation Plan for your approval. This sets out my proposal for how your new garden will look, and includes scaled CAD (computer-aided design) layout plans of the whole garden along with visuals and photos showing the style of planting and hard landscape materials to be used.
Once the layout of the garden has been agreed in the Presentation Plan, I will be able to create the detailed planting plan showing each plant needed for your garden scheme. From this we can extract a schedule to send out wholesale nurseries when it is time to source the plants.
The masterplan is the basis for tender documents to get quotes from the landscapers who will build the garden. I provide the landscaper with any detailed construction drawings and specifications they need. Once you have selected a landscaper, either from my network or from your own, I will monitor their work on the project to ensure they build the garden as I designed it.
Once the hard landscaping is finished, it’s time for planting. I use my network of nurseries to select your plants and employ a team of horticulturalists plant them. It is at this point that we will install any irrigation and lighting that has been agreed as part of the design.
Although I don't offer regular maintenance services, I do love to come back for biannual visits to see how your garden is developing and provide expert guidance for whoever is maintaining it.
